Mature rubber trees (15 to 25 m tall) are the tallest structures in many landscapes and are highly vulnerable to strong winds and lightning strikes. Sumatran squalls (Aug to Nov) and thunderstorms during the monsoon transitions cause the most damage. Losses are highly localized (line or cluster) but can wipe out large fractions of a block in a single event.

Cause

  • Sumatran squalls (Aug-Nov, sudden 60+ km/h winds from the west)
  • Thunderstorm downdrafts during monsoon transitions (Apr-May, Oct-Nov)
  • Lightning strikes direct on tall trees, often propagating to 5 to 15 neighbors via root grafts
  • Shallow root systems on compacted or waterlogged soil (uprooting)
  • Over-tapped trees with weakened trunks (snapping at the panel)
  • Panel-utilized trees near replanting age (structural weakness)

Effect

Field signs:
  • Line of snapped or leaning trees along the wind direction
  • Circular cluster of dead trees with no visible pathogen (lightning signature)
  • Bark scorching on the strike tree
  • Latex flow zero on affected trees within days

Satellite signals

Wind damage is best detected by comparing before/after high-res imagery. NDVI drops are localized and easy to miss at block-scale averages.

Inspect within 48 hours of a storm

Run the Field Walk Protocol on any block with a wind/lightning alert. Walk boundaries and high-exposure lines first.

Salvage the tappable panel

On snapped trees where the trunk is intact below the panel, complete the last few taps to salvage latex before the tree dries out.

Fell and remove

Fell dead and severely damaged trees. Remove wood from the block within 30 days to prevent it becoming a white root reservoir.

Mark lightning circles

Lightning kills a circular cluster (5 to 15 trees) via root grafts. Mark the whole circle for felling, not just the strike tree.

Replant gaps

Small gaps can be under-planted with the same clone if the block is < 15 years old. Larger gaps wait for the next replanting cycle.
